Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). It is acceptable if the submission has been deposited in a preprint server; however, this must be disclosed upon article submission, along with the preprint's DOI or link.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • All listed authors meet the ICMJE criteria for authorship (substantial contribution to the work; drafting or critically revising the manuscript; final approval of the version to be published; and agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work), and no one meeting these criteria has been omitted.
  • If the submission involves human subjects, human data, or animal research, it includes a statement confirming approval by the appropriate institutional review board (IRB) or ethics committee (or documented exemption), and if the study is a clinical trial, its registration number and registry name (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov) are provided.
  • I consent to my manuscript being processed by IMJ's AI review system for peer evaluation, with the understanding that a) it will not be uploaded to any platform lacking contractual confidentiality protections, and b) it will not be used to train public AI models.

Manuscript Preparation

Submissions should be prepared in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format, single-spaced, using a 12-point font, with italics (not underlining) for emphasis. All submissions must adhere to the ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work.

Preprints

IMJ permits deposit of submissions on a preprint server. If the submission has been posted as a preprint, this must be disclosed at the time of submission, along with the preprint's DOI or link. This is not considered prior publication.

Authorship

All listed authors must meet the ICMJE criteria for authorship: substantial contribution to the work; drafting or critically revising the manuscript; final approval of the version to be published; and agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work. No individual meeting these criteria may be omitted, and no individual who does not meet them should be listed as an author.

Ethics and Trial Registration

Submissions involving human subjects, human data, or animal research must include a statement of approval by the appropriate institutional review board (IRB) or ethics committee, or documentation of exemption. Clinical trials must report their registration number and registry name (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov).

Competing Interests

All submitting authors must file a Competing Interest (CI) statement disclosing any financial or personal relationships that could inappropriately influence the work.

Funding and Supporting Agencies

Authors must disclose all sources of research funding and institutional support. If the study was supported in whole or in part by NIH funding, authors are responsible for depositing the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in PubMed Central (PMC) via the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS), in accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy; IMJ does not perform this deposit on the author's behalf.

References

References should be cited in the text using sequential numbers in square brackets, in the order they first appear (e.g., [1], [1,2] for multiple references, [1-4] for a range). The reference list should appear at the end of the manuscript in the same numerical sequence as cited in-text, not alphabetically. For works with more than six authors, list the first six names followed by "et al."

Note: Journal names should be abbreviated per NLM/PubMed convention. Not all sources have volume/issue numbers; where an electronic journal provides an article identifier instead of a page range, use the identifier.

Figures, Tables, and Supporting Information

Figures and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate point, or submitted as separate files per journal preference. Supporting information (datasets, appendices, checklists, extended figures/tables) should be named using an "S" plus a number (e.g., "S1 Table," "S2 Fig.") and captions listed at the end of the manuscript.

Articles

AI-Assisted, Editor-Adjudicated Peer Review

Internet Medical Journal (IMJ) uses a two-stage artificial intelligence review process for original articles, combined with editorial oversight. 

Stage 1: Confidential Review

Upon submission, a large language model conducts an initial review functioning as a standard peer reviewer. This review is confidential, visible only to the editor and the corresponding author, and is never published. The author may revise the manuscript or respond to the points raised.

Stage 2: Published Review

After the author's response, a second AI review is conducted. For accepted articles, this review is published alongside the accepted article. 

  • Critical issue identified. The manuscript is returned to the authors or rejected. At editorial discretion, authors may be granted one further opportunity to revise and resubmit.
  • No critical issue identified. In this case, the AI review consists of a brief summary: what the manuscript does well, and what readers should scrutinize or treat with caution. This is not a numeric score or a pass/fail checklist; it is a concise orientation for readers approaching the published article.

The editor may edit or add to the Stage 2 review before publication. AI output is an input to editorial judgment, not a replacement for it. Final publication decisions rest with the editor.

Published articles accept comments from readers with verified ORCID identity. Comments are from the community and do not represent IMJ policy, nor does the IMJ endorse reader comments.
