Parents should get a new mattress for their baby to sleep on, according to this study of 131 infants who died from suddent infant death syndrome. Babies who routinely slept on an infant mattress previously used by another child was approximately three times more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome. The association was particularly strong if the mattress came from another home. [ BMJ 2002;325:1007 ( 2 November ) ]
